Hello Sailor! main index

Long-Form Disclaimer ("Don't Sue Me")

These pages have been written in reaction to ongoing debates in the USENET newsgroup alt.fan.sailor-moon in order to address, demystify and explore controversial sexuality, relational and gender issues in the Bishoujo Senshi Sailormoon anime and manga.

The author works on the assumption that those citations attributed to Naoko Takeuchi presently available online and in Animerica magazine are correct, and has attempted to the best of her ability to verify their accuracy.

With the exception of portions examining how the anime and manga have been altered for international audiences, these pages rely on the original works wherever possible. Having only very basic skills in the Japanese language, the author relies on fan translations which she trusts not to alter the intended meaning of dialogue and to be reasonably accurate. Where manga is cited, no Mixx translations have been used save to discuss the antics of Mixx themselves. Fanfic is not used as a resource, although doujinshi art has been used in the site's design.

The author approaches these issues from a North American, sex-radical feminist viewpoint, and, as such, is biased in those directions when attempting to address heteronormative deviations. Attempts to research Japanese views of such issues have been made; failings in this regard can be attributed to the author's ignorance in such cases. When submitting bug reports regarding the text herein, please support any "in Japanese culture" arguments with a verifiable source.

The user will find no overtly erotic content here (aside from the charged issues of sexual preference/orientation, gender identity, romantic relationships and butch/femme iconography themselves); however, the pages should be considered to be of an adult nature, as they do frankly discuss sexual issues. It is advised that the reader be of the legal age of consent in their jurisdiction and be capable of handling the discussion. The reader should have encountered a shorter disclaimer with this advisory upon entering the site. The author assumes no responsibility for the actions (or reactions) of the reader.

Bishoujo Sailor Sailormoon is copyright (c) Naoko Takeuchi, Kodansha, and (anime) Toei Doga. Images, quotes and filmclips are provided under the "fair use" doctrine and are not intended as copyright infringement. Certain images were found in the library at sailormoon.org; others were acquired from binaries newsgroups and random image galleries. Images from Artbook Infinity came from the now defunct "Genga" site at UCLA. In some cases, the source of images is unknown. The author has used materials from her personal collection wherever possible (most of the manga scans are hers, as well as all of the mpeg clips), and performed all graphics and video editing tasks.
