Is This Site Hentai?

[A note to the reader: "hentai" can mean abnormal or pornographic; in English-speaking anime fandom, the term has an almost exclusively sexual connotation. "Ecchi" (also spelled "etchi"), in its Westernised usage, is a milder term -- in context, slightly sexually twisted. In some circles, "hentai" has a fairly negative subtext, and those who enjoy or produce it are stigmatised. There is a Hentai FAQ.]

Depends. You certainly won't find archives of lemons here; nor will you see vast libraries of adult fan-art (some doujinshi* pictures have been used for visual effect, but nothing more explicit than what can be found in the original manga or Artbook Infinity). Unfortunately, there are people who will bristle as soon as you bring up anything that these pages deal with -- for whom the very concept of anime/manga characters being sexual or gender-deviant constitutes "hentai content," or at least "ecchi."

The definition, in this case, is probably going to be personal. I think there's a big difference between saying "Haruka and Michiru are an example of a contemporary tachi/neko lesbian couple," or even displaying a picture of them kissing, and saying "Haruka and Michiru must be incredibly hot in bed" and displaying a picture of Michiru in her strap-on.

I will not desexualize Sailormoon, for my own purposes or for anyone else's; I refuse to accept that a show like this isn't meant to be seen for what it is. The contents are subversive by the standards of English-speaking countries (to varying degrees, but especially for children's entertainment), and much of the controversial material simply isn't up for debate. The point is to explore what is there in a thoughtful and calm fashion, including some extra information along the way about why those things are that way in the first place. This will probably irritate some people. If you are offended, you're probably better off with the hentaiFREE index (especially if you buy into the "poor little kiddies and big bad Internet smut" argument -- I certainly don't).

If you think it's absurd that I had to include this section at all, please visit hentaiFREEfree, a spinoff project of Hello Sailor!. It should be obvious that I feel pretty strongly about this.

*doujinshi: fan-drawn manga, much better tolerated by Japanese copyright owners than a Western equivalent fanwork would be. Some, though not all, doujinshi are erotic in nature. [back]
